The Wiles of the Devil – The Devil Lies!

Introduction:

  • Remember the old cartoon with Wile E. Coyote and the roadrunner? In each episode the coyote repeatedly attempts to catch the roadrunner.  These attempts usually backfire; and the roadrunner gets blown up by dynamite or crushed by a boulder, only to get up and repeat his attempts in the next episode.  The coyote uses every trick he knows how, every trap his imagination can conjure up.  He’s slick.  He’s tricky, thus his name “Wile E. Coyote.”
  • Dictionary.com defines a “wile” as “a trick, a stratagem meant to fool, trap, entice.”
  • Ephesians 6:11 (KJV) “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
  • Like the coyote, the devil is also wily. He also uses every trick he knows how, every trap his imagination can conjure up.  And, like the coyote, the devil is also persistent.  He’s always coming back, never giving up.
  • What makes the devil so wily? One of his tricks (wiles) – he despises the truth.  John 8:44 – “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
  • Sin came into the world when Eve believed a lie and obeyed it. Men have been believing Satan’s lies ever since.

Discussion:

  • Satan Lies About God.
    1. Satan lies when he tells you God does not exist.
      • Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
      • God’s creation allows the mind to see what would otherwise be unseen. When we see the physical world around us, we know there must be a creator; a designer; an adequate cause.  When we see the world around us, we see evidence for an awesome God.  There is no excuse for not believing in God!
    2. Satan lies when he tells you God doesn’t care about you.
      • 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
      • God has a sincere interest in us. God is concerned about our wellbeing. When you are having a bad day, God knows it.  When you are having trouble in school, God knows it.  When you are having trouble at work, God knows that too.  In fact, when you are having difficulty in any aspect of your life (marriage, family, health, finances, etc.), God knows it!  God has not left us to “fend for ourselves!” (without help).
  • Satan Lies About Himself.
    1. Satan lies when he tells you he doesn’t exist.
      • Matthew 25:41 “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:”
      • People like to make light of Satan. People like to joke about him (anyone remember Flip Wilson?).  We portray Satan as a funny little man with pointed ears, and long tail, and carrying a pitchfork.  But Satan is much more than that.  He is a real, spiritual, powerful being who wants to do everything he can to draw us away from God.
    2. Satan lies when he tells you there is no hell.
      • 2 Peter 2:4-9 “4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.”
      • The Bible, numerous times, describes hell as a real place. A place of unending torment.  A place where there is no comfort, no relief.  Friends, it’s a place I don’t want to go.
  • Satan Lies About You.
    1. Satan lies when he tells you that you are insignificant (of little or no worth).
      • Genesis 1:26 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”
      • You are of great worth. God made you and God does not make useless junk!  God knew, despite your flaws, you were worth dying for.
    2. Satan lies by telling you, “you can’t.”
      • Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
      • Satan wants to lie to you, making you believe you can’t live the life of a Christian, you can’t please God, you can’t change, etc. You can do it!  You can live the life God wants you to life.  Remember, Christ died for an imperfect people.  You are made righteous, not by your own merit, but by the mighty blood of Christ.

Conclusion:

  • It’s important that we understand the wiles of the devil. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices (II Corinthians 2:11).
  • But, as tricky as the devil may be, we don’t have to be one of his victims. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8).
