It has sometimes been said that the New Testament church, that is, the church of Christ, does not have music in its worship. Of course, the church has music in its worship!
What those who say the church has no music really mean is the church does not use instruments such as pianos, guitars, or drums in its worship.
And that’s true. When we study the pattern set forth in the New Testament for worship offered to God, we find no authority for such instruments.
Paul wrote, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19.
In the Old Testament, making melody had reference to the playing of musical instruments. But now, as we worship according to instructions given in the New Testament, making melody is to be done in the heart. You could say our heart strings are being plucked.
Yes friends, the New Testament church, the church of Christ, has music in its worship. Singing offered to God is acappella – without the use of mechanical instruments. It’s the only type of music authorized in the Bible for our worship. It’s the only kind of music God accepts when worshipping Him.
