Why Read the Bible?

It can be found in most homes, on night stands in motel rooms, tables in doctors’ waiting rooms and even in court rooms.  It is consistently, year after year, included in the list of best selling books. It must certainly be the most well read book for hundreds of years.  Yet, in relation to the number that have been sold, it may be among the least read.

Preachers often emphasize the importance of reading the Bible but sometimes neglect to stress the “why” of reading.  Consider five reasons why we ought to read the Bible.

One, it is the word of God. I Timothy 3:16-17. Communication is important in every relationship in life, including a person’s relationship with God. How can we expect to draw close to God if we fail to allow him to speak to us through His written word?

Two, it is the light that guides us, not only through this life, but to eternal life. Psalm 119:105. We understand the importance of light, whether it be lights along an airport runway or headlights on our cars. The absence of light results in accidents. Many people are hurting because they are walking in the darkness, not allowing the light of God’s Word to direct them through life.

Three, it is impossible to mature as a Christian without spending time in reading the Bible. I Peter 2:2. We should have the same craving for God’s Word that a baby has for its mother’s milk. Without reading the Bible, we are spiritually malnourished.

Four, it helps us in overcoming temptation. Psalm 119:11. The scriptures provided the knowledge Jesus needed to defeat Satan, and the scriptures will do the same for us.

Five, it is the standard by which we will all be judged. John 12:48. Every one of us will one day be judged. Each of us will spend and eternity in heaven or hell. Doesn’t it only make sense that we would want to know the standard by which we will be judged?

Can you think of one good reason not to read the Bible?
