One of the reasons for our singing is to teach and admonish one another in song (Colossians 3:16).
The Hymn, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” is one example of such a song. The title alone reminds us of the importance of taking time to reflect on the cross. To meditate on the death of our savior and what it means to us as Christians. The song helps us appreciate the cross. It helps us understand the significance and magnitude of the events at the cross.
Perhaps most important of all, it helps us understand how we should respond to the cross. It reminds us there is nothing we can give that can adequately express our thanks to God. It encourages us to give our all in living for God.
